The Permissive Powers That Be

MSNBC reported on a woman who kicked her battling kids out of the car and drove off. She was arrested and ordered not to have any contact with the kids.

Oh, pleeeaaase. Can the system get any more out of touch?

I still recall a junior high teacher who recalled for the class how his mom had gotten sick of his adolescent smart mouth on a drive home, stopped the car, and told him to walk the last mile. Laughing, he said he didn't cross that line again.

We've only heard one side of the story, and I'd bet that the mom intended to drive around the block. Instead, the permissive powers that be yanked her kids away -- who were in the midst of learning a lesson.

Yes, bad people are out there, but what are the chances that in 30 minutes or less one of them would have swooped in to harm the daughters?

Are we really helping children by putting them in a bubble, making sure they never see where inappropriate behavior can take them?
