I had a dentist appointment last week for the bi-annual teeth cleaning. Again, as it's been for the last many moons, I had the spit sucked out of my mouth. No more spit sinks. Alas, progress always comes with a cost ...

My mother is one of those mothers who gave "The Look" when we kids did improper things like spit. Going to the dentist was my one chance to spit without getting The Look." Even better, often there was blood involved.

I still miss sanctioned spitting.
